LAHORE: Chairman Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Ijaz Butt said that he did not accept the resignation tendered by Younis Khan and he will remain as captain of the national cricket team.
He said that Younis will lead the team in the series of One-day Internationals and Test matches to be played against New Zealand next month in the United Arab Emirates while Shahid Afridi will be captain in Twenty20 International.
Ijaz Butt was addressing at a press conference after the meeting of the PCB Governing Board here at the board headquarters in the Gaddafi Stadium on Monday.
He briefed media about various decisions and proceedings of the meeting. Some of these were appointment of appointment of the election commissioner, international cricket schedule and domestic cricket structure.
Butt said that Younis's reaction to match-fixing allegations was natural and there was no reason to replace him.
"We have not accepted Younis's resignation and he will lead Pakistan in the limited over series against New Zealand next month," the PCB chairman told reporters.
"When I made him captain earlier this year I did not set any tenure, so there will be no fixed tenure. As long as Younis is fit he will remain our captain and I hope that he leads Pakistan until the 2011 World Cup," said Butt.
Pakistan is due to play three one-day internationals and two Twenty20 internationals against New Zealand in the United Arab Emirates early next month before touring New Zealand and Australia for Test series.
Butt praised Younis's leadership qualities.
"He is a good captain, he led Pakistan to the World Twenty20 title," said Butt of Pakistan's triumph in England in June. "Then Pakistan beat India and reached the semi-final in the Champions Trophy, which was a big success.
"His reaction to match-fixing allegations was natural and had I been in his place, my reaction would have been the same. This was unacceptable, so we now want the team to get settled for the next series under Younus."
Ijaz Butt said that Yawar Saeed has once again been requested to take charge manager’s position till the tour of the UAE.
He told that fast bowler Mohammad Asif is not eligible to go to the UAE as their government has not allowed Asif to go there.
The PCB chief said that a committee has been formed for budget and it would present its report at the next meeting to be held on November 7.
He also told that allrounder Shahid Afridi will lead the Twenty20 team till the World Cup 2011.
